Mark Gorscak: The Heart and Hustle Behind Steelers Scouting

Mark Gorscak spent nearly thirty years finding football talent and guiding them to greatness. He brought an unmistakable blend of passion, humor, and wisdom to the game he loved. For Gorscak, football has been more than a job — it’s a way of life.

A Small-Town Guy With Big Football Dreams

Born and raised in Donora, Pennsylvania, Gorscak’s journey in football began long before his professional career. After earning a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration in Florida, he found his calling in player evaluation and development. His career path took him through roles as an athletic administrator for Dickinson College and Weber State, where he built relationships that would open the door to the pros.

In 1994, Gorscak landed his dream job as an area scout with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He covered the southern region before expanding his scope nationwide. Over his 28-year career, his love for the game helped him build winning teams. He contributed to four Super Bowl appearances, with the Steelers earning their rings in Super Bowls XL and XLIII.

Gorscak’s eye for talent and understanding of the game helped the Steelers maintain their reputation as one of the NFL’s most successful franchises.

An Icon of the NFL Combine

While his scouting helped shape the Steelers behind the scenes, viewers of the NFL Combine will recognize Gorscak as the face of the 40-yard dash. He served as the official starter for the event for over two decades. His blend of encouragement and no-nonsense advice helped calm jittery prospects and prepare them for one of the most pivotal moments in their football careers.

In recognition of his contributions to the game, Gorscak was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. More recently, he was honored at the 2002 C.O. Brocato Memorial Award for Lifetime Service in NFL Scouting. For Gorscak, though, the real reward has been seeing his players make it in the league and knowing he had a small hand in their success.

A New Chapter for Mark Gorscak

Although Gorscak officially retired from the Steelers, he hasn’t slowed down much, and his passion for football remains as strong as ever. He continues to lend his expertise to the Senior Bowl All-Star Game, where he scouts emerging talent and mentors the next generation of NFL prospects. Gorscak also frequently speaks at universities and football programs nationwide, sharing his insights on leadership, discipline, and the intricacies of scouting.

Today, Gorscak resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he stays connected to the football community as a lifelong fan of the Black and Gold.
