Holding the Line With Terence Garvin
Terence Garvin, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, left an impact on each of his teams during his time with the NFL, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. Having found success both during and after his time with the sport, Garvin is a shining example of the impact of hard work and dedication.
Life Before the NFL
Before his time with the NFL, Garvin started working hard at a young age to achieve his goals. Playing football in both high school and college prepared Terence well for his career in the NFL. Here are a few highlights from his years as a student athlete:
High School: Loyola Blakefield High
Terence attended Loyola Blakefield High, where he was able to develop his defensive style and build a foundation for his NFL career. Some of Garvin’s achievements there include:
- 32 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 forced fumble during his senior year
- 3 MIAA Class A Conference titles
- Participated in the Maryland Crab Bowl
- Maryland Consensus All-State Defensive back
The College Years: West Virginia University
Garvin took his talents to the next level when he attended West Virginia University, where he focused on multidisciplinary studies. Throughout his time with WVU, Terence soared to new heights and was able to support his team with outstanding play:
- WVU Defensive Champion: Coastal Carolina, USF, Louisville, and Marshall
- All-Big East Third Team
- Multiple rankings for the Big East for total tackles and tackles per game
- Recorded over 235 tackles and 10.5 sacks
- Played in every game in both his sophomore and junior years
The NFL Dream With the Pittsburgh Steelers
In 2013, Garvin was invited to attend the Pittsburgh Steelers rookie minicamp. This opened the door for him to join the team and start his NFL career as he left WVU. Terence played for the Steelers from 2013-2015, where he developed skills and prepared for his career in the NFL.
After his time with the Steelers, Garvin played for a variety of other teams including:
- Washington Redskins
- Seattle Seahawks
- Miami Dolphins
New Adventures With the AAF and XFL
In 2019, Terence officially started playing for the Alliance of American Football (AAF) with the Orlando Apollos. Even though the league ceased operations that year, Garvin achieved 24 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and six defensive passes across the stint of 8 games.
Later in 2020, Terence signed with the St. Louis Battlehawks, where he recorded a sack and 36 tackles prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Coaching and Continued Success
Now that his time as a player has concluded, Garvin takes his experience as a player and shares his insights with the next generation. Terence currently resides in Florida, where he serves as the defensive coordinator for FMU’s football team.
Terence has also been featured as a guest on multiple podcasts to share his perspective on current gameplay and popular defensive tactics of the NFL. Years after his time on the field, Garvin still makes Pittsburgh proud.
