Ernie Mills, a key player for Pittsburgh in the ‘90s, is joining us to celebrate the 10th Anniversary Legends of Pittsburgh Cruise, giving fans the ultimate opportunity to meet a true black-and-gold icon while enjoying an unforgettable vacation aboard the Explorer of the Seas.

Growing Up To Be A Legend

Mills grew up in Dunnelon, FL, starring on the Dunnellon High School football team. When he arrived at the University of Florida on a football scholarship, he was ready to work hard for Galen Hall and Steve Spurrier as the Gator’s wide receiver. By the time he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science in 1990, he had earned his stripes with receiving yards, touchdowns, and a stellar 70-yard reception that poised him for the NFL draft the following year.

Ernie Mills: A Steelers Standout

Drafted by Pittsburgh in the third round of the 1991 NFL Draft, Mills quickly became known for his crisp route running, sure hands, and ability to make game-changing plays as #89. Steelers fans remember Ernie Mills as a clutch performer who delivered results when it mattered most. Over his six seasons with the Steelers, he racked up over 2,500 receiving yards, 18 touchdowns, and countless memorable moments that cemented his place in franchise history.

One of his most defining plays came during the 1995 AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts, where he hauled in a 37-yard reception that helped set the Steelers up to challenge the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. His ability to perform in high-pressure moments made him a fan favorite and a trusted target on the field.

Steelers Grit, Championship Pedigree

Mills wasn’t just a receiver; he fully embodied the hard-nosed, strategically-minded, never-quit attitude that defines Pittsburgh football. His physical playing style, strategic running routes, and reliability made him an invaluable asset to the Steelers offensive unit and later as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys. Even after his 118-game playing career culminated with 196 receptions, 20 touchdowns, and 2,934 yards, Mills remained connected to the game as a wide receiver coach, proving his deep understanding and love for football.
