Dwight Stone: Steeler Speedster & Special Team Standout
For eight seasons, Dwight Stone electrified Steelers fans with his blazing speed and versatility on the field. He rocketed by defenders as a wide receiver, returned kicks with explosive speed, and made clutch plays on special teams. His skills made him a key asset for Pittsburgh from 1987 to 1994. With a relentless work ethic and strong moral compass, Stone carved out a memorable career while wearing the Black and Gold.
Blazing a Trail in Black and Gold
Born on January 28, 1964, in Florala, Alabama, Stone’s path to the NFL was unconventional. He played college football at Middle Tennessee State University, and despite his elite speed and athletic abilities, he went undrafted in 1987. But his talent wasn’t ignored for long, as the Pittsburgh Steelers took a chance on him as a free agent.
It didn’t take long for Stone to prove he belonged on the team and on the field. His ability to outrun defenders and contribute in multiple areas of the game made him a valuable player on the Steeler’s starting roster. He would continue to refine his receiving skills and become a trusted member of Pittsburgh’s offensive lineup.
A Versatile Player for the Steelers
Stone’s impact on the Steelers wasn’t limited to a single role. Over eight seasons, he made his mark as a receiver, return specialist, and even a running back when the team needed him. His versatility earned him a place on the field, but his speed made him a legend. He soon became a threat to the opposition anytime he touched the ball.
Stone amassed 1,900 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns during his time with the Steelers Nation. His willingness to do whatever the team needed earned him respect from coaches and teammates.
A Leader On and Off the Field
After leaving the Steelers in 1994, Stone continued his NFL career, playing for the Carolina Panthers and later the New York Jets. He spent 14 seasons in the league, becoming a key contributor on special teams and a dependable presence for younger players.
Following his retirement from the NFL in 2000, Stone became a police officer for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a job he’d dreamed about before ever stepping onto a football field. His discipline, leadership, and team-player attitude made him a natural fit for this new role, where he continued to serve the community with the same passion he brought to the field.
Stone retired from the CMPD in 2015. He continues to live in North Carolina with his wife, Jennie and enjoys spending time with their three daughters. He remains active in the local community, volunteering at local schools and mentoring young athletes.
