Keith Willis: Pittsburgh’s Relentless Rusher

Keith Willis played ten seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, going from underrated pass rusher to record-setting legend of the 1980s defensive line. Known for his grit and passion for the game, Willis carved out a legendary career that left an indelible mark on the team and continues to inspire Steelers fans today.

An Undrafted Gem Makes Steelers History

Willis was born in 1959 in Newark, New Jersey, and started his football career playing for Northeastern University as a standout defensive lineman. Despite his impressive college career, Willis went undrafted in 1982. While that might have been a setback that deterred others, Willis was determined to play.

The determination paid off, and the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Willis as an undrafted free agent that same year. He quickly made his mark on the team. In his rookie season, he earned a spot on the roster and became one of the league’s most formidable pass rushers. Willis would play ten seasons with the Steelers, recording an incredible 59 career sacks before leaving the team in 1991. His record ranks him among the top pass rushers in the team’s history.

The Steel Curtain of the 1970s had set a high standard, but Willis continued the tradition and became a part of Pittsburgh’s defensive legacy in the post-Steel Curtain years.

From the Field to Life as a Coach

After leaving the Steelers, Willis went on to play for Washington, the Bills, and the Jets. After retiring as a player, he soon put his knowledge and experience to work as a defensive line coach, shaping the next generation of players. He began his coaching career at Slippery Rock University before moving on to coach at other schools such as North Carolina A&T and the University of Cincinnati, as well as the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

Willis’ coaching style reflects the traits he displayed as a player: hard work, discipline, and sticking to the basics. His passion for the game and connection with the players have made him a respected figure in college football.
